    Whether you're looking to start sailing, improve your skills, or just come for a great day out on the water, we have the course for you. Our ideal location and expert tuition make our sailing courses fun, safe and educational for everyone.

    The Centre has a variety of boats to suit all ages and levels of sailing experience; the fleet includes Wayfarers, Picos, Toppers, Terras, Topaz and Optimists.

    You can achieve official RYA qualifications on all our courses. The speed at which people learn and variable weather conditions can make a difference to how long qualifications take to achieve. As you progress through the course, your instructor will tailor the course to ensure you have a good time and learn as much as possible.

  • Start Sailing (RYA Level 1)

    Experience Required: None

    This course is ideal for those with little or no previous experience of sailing. Enthusiastic, professional instructors will guide you through your RYA Level 1 qualification and give you a sound practical and theoretical knowledge of sailing a single handed boat.

    Basic Skills (RYA Level 2)

    Experience Required: RYA Level 1

    This course will further your knowledge on all aspects of sailing and teach you new skills and techniques. It's also for those who might want to refresh their skills and gain confidence. Instructors will teach you how to sail efficiently and safely and how to rig according to weather conditions; the course is geared towards RYA Adult Level 2.

    Better Sailing (RYA Level 3)

    Experience Required: RYA Level 2

    This course aims to provide an exciting but safe setting to improve your skills and allow further enjoyment of the sport. You will have the opportunity to perfect techniques and manoeuvres afloat, and also to learn essential sailing theory ashore. The course is geared towards the Level 3 certificate.

    Midweek Sailors Beginners (RYA Level 1)

    Experience Required: None

    Specially tailored for the more mature sailor, these relaxed Wayfarer sessions are run with an experienced staff member aboard each boat. In your block of four sessions you can either learn new skills and develop your techniques, or just enjoy being out on the water.

    Midweek Sailors Improvers (RYA Level 2)

    Experience Required: RYA Level 1

    This fun, sociable course is ideal for people who have completed their RYA Level 1. You will be able to refine your technique at a leisurely pace, whilst improving and developing your sailing skills with like-minded people. You will have the opportunity to continue using the reliable, stable Wayfarers as well as the option of trying our fleet of single handers.

    Midweek Sailors Better Sailing (RYA Level 3 or Seamanship)

    Experience Required: RYA Level 2

    You will be able to refine your technique whilst improving and developing your sailing skills with like-minded people.

    Seamanship Skills

    Experience Required: RYA Level 3

    This course covers advanced boat-handling in moderate weather conditions. You will improve your decision-making process, with enhanced knowledge and terminology. Instruction will be given on improved techniques and manoeuvres and practised in a variety of boats with instructors giving you constructive feedback.

    This course works towards the RYA Seamanship Skills Qualification.

    Sailing with Spinnakers

    Experience Required: RYA Stage 4

    This course discovers the thrill of sailing with spinnakers in faster crafts. Our specialist instructors will give top tips to polish your sailing in these exciting boats.

    RYA Day Sailing

    Experience Required: RYA Level 3

    The course covers a range of topics including meteorology, first aid, equipment, sailing in adverse conditions and navigation. It will give you the knowledge, competence and confidence to plan and manage a successful short cruise in a day sailing boat.

    RYA Start Racing

    Experience Required: RYA Level 3

    This course is designed to give sailors the confidence, skill and knowledge to take part in club racing in good conditions. The course involves the sailor taking part in a range of enjoyable exercises designed to build confidence and improve skills.

    Adult Sailors Club

    Experience Required: Adult RYA Level 2 or equivalent

    The relaxed atmosphere is perfect for you to practice your skills, try different types of boats and enjoy sailing in the beautiful surroundings of Christchurch Harbour.

    Each of our evenings is themed and this is a great way for you to meet other friendly sailors and wind down after a hectic day at work. Instructors and experienced sailors are on hand to offer you guidence and provide safety cover.

    Dinghy Instructor

    Experience Required: Powerboat Level 2 & First Aid

    Run over five days our Dinghy Instructor courses will develop your teaching skills so that you can work as a professional sailing instructor. The course is run by our full-time experienced RYA Coach Assessor and is moderated on the last day by a second RYA Coach Assessor. The pre-entry test is included in the price.
